Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of vision loss for Canadians over 55 and affects approximately 2.5 million Canadians. With AMD, central vision is affected, making it harder to do activities like reading, driving, and distinguishing faces.

There are two kinds of AMD: dry AMD and wet AMD. The wet form of AMD is less common than dry AMD. Approximately one in ten people with dry AMD will develop wet AMD. With wet AMD, abnormal vessels can leak fluid and blood into the eye, and results in blind spots in central vision.

Losing sight can be a difficult experience, and keeping up with medical appointments can be challenging, taking away from the moments that matter most. Fortunately, there are options that can help.

Here are some questions you can bring to your next appointment with your ophthalmologist.

  1. What options exist for my wet AMD?

  2. What can I do to maximize my vision?

  3. How can I better manage my condition?
