Thanks to our R&D efforts, Roche has amassed one of the most diverse and comprehensive portfolios for the therapeutic areas we serve, introducing more than 100 drugs to the Canadian marketplace.

Global R&D activities are focused on areas of high unmet medical need. Our highly skilled people discover and develop innovative medicines addressing prevention, diagnosis and therapy to offer physicians and patients integrated healthcare solutions. With our continuous investment in R&D — and by using cutting-edge science and state-of-the-art technology — we will meet tomorrow's healthcare needs.

Areas of global research we engage in include:

  • Anemia
  • Cardiovascular diseases
  • Central nervous system
  • Dermatology
  • Infectious diseases
  • Inflammatory and autoimmune diseases
  • Metabolic disorders
  • Oncology
  • Osteoporosis
  • Paediatrics
  • Respiratory diseases
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Transplantation
  • Virology

We have also partnered with leading Canadian and international biotechnology partners to bring innovative therapies to market.

For more than two decades, our Clinical Research Group has played a pivotal role in Roche's global development programs for new medicines. In 2005, we had 21 compounds in development and more than 2000 patients enrolled in clinical trials in Canada, making us one of the leaders within the Roche global development group. Throughout the years, we have worked extensively with physicians, healthcare institutions and CRO (clinical research operations) partners to advance healthcare opportunities for Canadians in areas such as oncology and rheumatoid arthritis.

About 5,000 scientists around the world are committed to developing new healthcare solutions in crucial therapeutic areas.

In 2003, Roche globally spent 18.3% of its revenue in the Pharmaceuticals Divisions for R&D.
