In Canada, Roche has excelled in our environmental initiatives. We have made great strides in reducing energy consumption and waste streams, which promise to have a significant and positive long-term impact on our operations and the communities we serve. We pride ourselves in being industry leaders in our environmental efforts and strive to surpass energy, emission and waste reduction targets.
Some of our initiatives in this area include:
•facility upgrades, including conversions to energy-efficient lighting and heat recovery systems, and environmentally-neutral ammonia-based cooling systems to eliminate CFCs and HCFCs (pharmaceuticals and diagnostics buildings)
•elimination of disposable water bottles and conversion to glass dishes to reduce waste
•water recovery programs that have reduced consumption by 49%
•a facility-wide composting program that has diverted 65% or 4.4 tonnes of organic waste from landfill
•an 84.8% reduction in waste going to landfill between 2004 and 2009, which far exceeds the industry average of 45 to 75%
